What is a Project?

A project is a temporary endeavour undertaken to produce a change. That change could be to develop a new, or implement a change to an existing service, product or organisation.

So what characterises a project? As mentioned above, they are not intended to be enduring or 'forever' - they are temporary. Not necessarily short-term, but they have a defined start and finish.

They also require resources. Examples of resource could be people, skills, time, equipment or materials.

The Scope of a project can be considered as comprising of three elements: Time, Cost and Performance (performance is sometimes also referred to as Specification, Quality, Requirements).

Examples of Projects

Everywhere in life there exist examples of projects. A new hospital being built, someone planning a family holiday, a company developing a new website, a sports team planning for their new season.

There are numerous famous historical examples of projects too. Think of the Egyptian pyramids, the moon landings, Concorde and the Clifton suspension bridge.

Project Management

Project Management is the obtaining and organisation of resources, application of skills, tools, techniques and methods to deliver a projects desired outcomes or benefits.

The skills of a project manager can be applied to any project across any industry, i.e. they are transferable. For example, good communications and stakeholder managment are as relevant on a project to build a nuclear power station, as they are on a project to develop a new family car. So too are Risk Management, Scheduling, Monitoring and Control and so on.

Two very different industries, but many of the same skills, tools and techniques are used to plan and deliver those projects.
